Honolulu Police Department – Oldtimer’s Club

On October 29, 1947, forty-five members of the Honolulu Police Department met at 3:00 p.m. in the police station annex, located at 842 Bethel Street. They met with acting chairman Detective Jack BOTELHO on a proposal to start an association to honor all men in the department with at least 14 1⁄2 years of service, and especially Officer Thomas PHILLIPS for his present service of over 20 years.

Aha Hui O Na Maka‘i Hauola

When translated to English means: “THE ASSOCIATION OF THE POLICE”

“Hauola” refers to “THE LIVING HAU TREE”
In Hawaiian it represents “STURDINESS” and “USEFULNESS.”

Therefore, be it resolved the interpretation of the name of this Organization (HUI) be as follows:

The Association (“Hui”) of the police shall be joined together for the, purpose of promoting the benevolent aims of longevity, strength in life, good and welfare of its membership.

Mission Statement

“To Create a Positive Future by Honoring the Past while Serving the Present”

Aha Hui O Na Maka‘i Hauola is a private, not for profit organization.  Its mission is to support and promote activities that foster comradeship for the general welfare of its members.

To foster a spirit of loyal service and fraternalism amongst its members and the Honolulu Police Department.  Wherever possible, to assist members and loved ones in their time of need.

To provide advice, guidance and inspiration to its members in the fostering of community service and assistance to the Honolulu Police Department as they strive in carrying out their mission.

Aloha to the cherished members of “Aha Hui O Na Maka’i Hauola,” The Association of the Police”-Hauola (Sturdiness and Usefulness).

It with great humility and honor to serve as the President of this sterling “Seventy-Four (74) Year Old” organization in which its members have impressively served and protected the property and residents within the City and County of Honolulu.

All of us can remember entering the building of the Honolulu Police Department, weather sworn or in a support of the Honolulu Police Department, it was an awesome moment. We will foster and continue to have a positive association with the Honolulu Police Department and the tate Organization of Police Officers.

We all remember mentors or admired leaders in the ranks of our past. These legends created the Positive Future for all of us, the Retired Members of the Honolulu Police Department will carry on the Past into the Present.

In Lokahi, (Unity) our activities will foster friendship, and the general welfare of our members. Caring for each other is promoting the basis of our Hui, and the strengths in life.

We are chartered to provide advice, guidance and inspiration among our members and the community in which we serve. We will continue to be Ha’aheo (Proud) Retired members of the Honolulu Police Department.

The Association (Hui), Aha Hui O Na Maka’I Hauola will continue to flourish for generations to come, and care for one another through kind and unselfish effort.
